Disclaimer: This is not an original post. But a re-posting of an article by Bro. David Cooke. I was very much blessed and hoping that this article could reach more women out there and be also blessed.
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. I Tim.2:9-10
This is a message not of legalism but of obedience! Is Jesus really Lord in this area of your life? These are basic principles of modesty and immodesty.
Clothes were created by God to “cover and conceal” the body and not to “allure and reveal” the body.
Modesty involves dressing in such a way as not to draw attention to the body. Immodesty is dressing in a way that is indecent and sensual and reveals pride of appearance above being humble and pleasing the Lord in dressing in a way that does not cause others to look at our bodies.
Modesty is the outward expressing of the inward holiness of heart.
Dressing immodestly can cause others to have impure, lustful thoughts which would make BOTH people guilty. It is wrong to have lustful thoughts, but it’s also wrong to wear clothes that draw attention to one’s body and stir up lustful thoughts!
As Christians, we are new and different people. WE PURSUE HOLINESS.
Our clothes make a statement to others, and our character is revealed in our clothes. The Bible mentions the ‘attire of a harlot, ‘ and that is the clothing of prostitutes and strange women. We all know how they dress and it is – seductively!!
So your clothing (how you dress) sends a message.
But what message are you sending is the key question. What do our clothes say about our inner character?
God rejected Adam and Eve’s fig leave immodest covering and He Himself fully clothed them. Think about that. (Gen. 3:21 – Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.)
We must not have a ‘Fig Leaf Christianity.’ Now I cannot imagine a person filled with the Spirit and then would get offended about this important topic and defend immodest apparel! If you knew the whole world was blind, would you spend so much time and money on clothes that you know would draw the wrong kind of attention to yourself?
Read 1 Tim 2:9-10 again. Notice the emphasis is on being modest, being godly and being full of good works! So many wear clothes that are way too tight, way too short and way too low, revealing way too much skin and this is the opposite of a modest heart that is seeking purity in all areas of life.
